Rebecca Olsen Photography bio picture
  • Welcome!

Thanks for stopping by my little corner of cyberspace.

I am a portrait photographer, based just outside Canberra in Australia. Portrait sessions in 2011 will be available on a limited basis, whilst I work around having a baby in the house. :) On this site you'll find lots of images from previous clients, a blog, loads of information, and tidbits on photography. Stick around and explore. Write comments. I'd love to know what you think!

    Cheers

    Rebecca

PS. Have you ever wondered if photographers go to other photographers for their portraits? Answer: YES!!! Don't you just LOVE the image on the left of me and my hubby? This was taken by Gabi from Red Bird Photography in Hawaii. If you are ever visiting the beautiful islands, look her up at www.redbirdphotography.com and book a session. You won't be disappointed.

Things that little boys are made of…

What is it about little boys and trains? Nearly every little boy that I know is obsessed with trains. (Or Bob the Builder, but that’s another story.)

When this gorgeous family contacted me for family photos, the mum mentioned that her boys love trains. Those of you who have been following my work probably know by now that I try to incorporate something about the family and the kids into every family portrait session. Something that will be unique to them. Well, at the mention of trains, I got researching and a fellow photographer suggested this awesome location. (Yes, professional photographers in Canberra do actually talk to each other and like each other!)

You should have seen the boys’ eyes light up when they saw where we were. I think it was the closest thing to heaven that they could think of. The weather was bitterly cold, but it was only the grown-ups who huddled against the walls, trying to get warm. The boys were too busy exploring and finding all kinds of treasures. When a real train decided to come along, their delight was almost euphoric (and no amount of silly faces and bribery on my part was able to get them to actually look at me or the camera! ha ha).

They also brought along their favourite toy trains and track, and we set it up on the old station platform. Did you notice the small red engine? More than 4 years ago, that little engine was a gift the “new baby boy” had “given” his big brother when he was brought home from the hospital. It’s still the favourite and now the boys get to play with it together. The bond of brotherhood is an amazing thing to witness.

I’m so happy that we were able to capture such precious memories.

Beautiful Autumn colours. Gorgeous family.

Autumn is a fantastic time for photography in Canberra. The yellow and red colours are just magnificent, and the chill in the air means lots of comfy, cozy layers of clothing. Add to that a gorgeous family, and magic happens!! Enjoy the sneak peek guys, I can’t wait to show you the rest!

Nigel Merrick (Photography Coach) - Hi Rebecca

Love the colors and the real sense of life in these images – you captured this family so well and so naturally too. I’m sure they’re going to have a hard time picking their favourites!

My personal favourite has to be the big on the middle :-)

The Missing Peace

I recently had the pleasure of meeting an extremely inspiring woman. Nandita has just finished writing her first book, and needed some portraits taken for the book jacket. Her life and her story are so inspiring, I just have to share a few snippets with you.

The book is titled “Missing Peace” and documents Nandita’s journey from India to Australia and back again, in search of herself. It’s a highly personal book with real characters and a narration that interweaves intimate details of a tangled web of passion, betrayal, and humiliation. It is a bold and compelling reality, an emotional roller coaster. It’s about a woman finding herself lost between two cultures, yet desperately seeking to belong. It is a story that needs to be told.

Will Nandita find what she was looking for?  Through the pages of “ Missing Peace” readers will walk with her on the road to redemption, love and trust.

“Missing Peace” is coming soon to a good bookstore near you. Keep an eye out for it, and I will be releasing details once the publisher gives us the nod.

Baby Ethan – 11 weeks old

This week, I had the privilege of photographing 11 week old Baby Ethan. What a cutie pie!! He was full of smiles and laughs, and is quite obviously the apple of his parents’ eyes. He lapped up the attention of the camera and was quite happy to look straight down the lens. Maybe a future career as a model is ahead? His dark eyes and extra long eyelashes both captured and melted my heart! He loved my lambs wool blanket and whilst sleeping, kept trying to bury his face in it. As pretty as my blankets are, I’m sure Ethan’s parents and family would prefer to see a photo of his actual face! But every time I added more padding under his head to raise him up, he would burrow his head back down again. Silly little sausage.:)

Thank you again for allowing me to spend the morning with you. It was a pleasure to meet little Ethan and I trust that your portraits will give you happy memories for a lifetime.

Jerrabomberra’s newest resident

It was my absolute pleasure to photograph baby Rebecca Hope last week. What a gorgeous baby, just 3 days old and still so new and tiny. Rebecca came into the world via a water birth in the comfort of her own home, surrounded by her big sisters. What a great start to life. Welcome to the world, Baby Rebecca. Your parents have great taste in names.:)
